isn't elinchrom made by Germans ?

Elinchrom HQ is in Geneva, Switzerland, where they both design & manufacture. The language spoken in this part of Switzerland is predominantly French.

However, the fact that the product is made in Europe doesn't make it cheap to start with, and the Euro is currently trading on a 15 month high against the $. The Swiss Franc is also very strong against the $

I just got back from Ireland. WOW I got beat up on the euro.

I did not know that about french being spoken there. You are like the CIA world fact book. :)

Aren't most products made in India? The cheaper strobes like the D-lite and bx-ris are made in India as was my Quadra. The plastics on these models are kinda flimsy IMO especially when compared to their upper end products. My old Ranger wasn't made in India and it seemed far more robust than the Quadra.

Being made in india is not what makes the less expensive lights seem "flimsy". That was a design and manufacturing decision made by product management in Switzerland.

The parts required to build a strobe are similar whether its a $500 or $5,000 recommended selling price.
The only way to reduce cost is to either buy lots of parts at one time and get discount concessions from suppliers. Or, design housing and other non-electrical parts so they are cheaper to fabricate. Also, to make the assembly process simpler and less costly.

Assembly in India probably has more to do with labor costs than anything.

True.

It doesn't take much looking around in the world of Pro grade strobes to determine that Elinchrom gear is anything but expensive. There are Broncolor heads that are more than a whole ranger kit.

why is Elinchrom so expensive ? Is it reliable ?

Prices in photographic gear vary depending on where they are manufactured, in the case of upper level elinchrom gear it is expensive because it is manufactured in Switzerland, since the work force there is more expensive than in other countries like China that hikes the prices up.

Things like quality control sometimes have to do with the price too (it costs money you know), but most of the time price is determined mostly by the cost of work force and in a second place the price of the parts needed to build/make it. :)

AFAIK Quadra is made in Switzerland, everything from battery to heads say Swiss Made, while stuff that is made in India say Designed in Switzerland Made in India (like the Skyports).
