Some people say that Penang and Georgetown are better than KL.
And you are better to lean some Chinese, as more Chinese there than the 'local' ;)

Penang is amazing. Really friendly people and lots of photo opportunities. I'm lucky enough to have a brother living there (Georgetown).

Hi, I am actually set to travel to Penang on August too. I was actually not too impressed with the photos I saw online. But I thought, what the heck, it's quite popular so it must be worth visiting, lol. Ok, I admit I haven't been planning yet so I would appreciate tips and updates on this thread :-)

I just got back from Penang.. Nice mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian cultures.. People are very fiendly and the food wonderful, alcohol is a tad expensive as you'd expect in a Muslim country..

Great Georgian achitecture in the older sectors, plus Chinese, Malay and Indian achitecture makes for good photography..

You must have been drinking with the tourists???? Either that or the alcohol is cheaper over here in Borneo... ;)

Hi,
Just felt that I should help those who are looking for the right time and places to shoot in Penang. The island has a variety of culture and every year Thaipusam is celebrated for 3 days with devotees carrying kavadis. My society (www.psp-penang.com.my (external link)) organised a visit for Asian photographers a year ago to see this festival and many vowed to come back. As for me I have been shooting this for the past 30 years and still look forward to the next year to come.

Check out the website below for more info or search, thaipusam, or cny (chinese new year celebrations) or heritage site for the time to visit Penang for photography.

Just helping out.
