I consider the C/Y Zeiss 35-70/3.4 as a gateway drug. Sucks people into MF and Zeiss and the idea of a non-Canon zoom being better than some Canon primes. Dangerous stuff.

Is there an easy method of manual focusing?

Because I CAN'T manual focus. My prescription is old, old film SLRs had a screen that made it easier, but I haven't seen any modern DSLRs with this.

You can change your focusing screen in 30 seconds, all you need to do is buy the focusing screen you like and put it in. I like the split focusing screen like there was in my old film days.

Take Care,

You can use a tripod and enable LV using 5x or 10x and chimp, peak at your histogram, & adjust EV to get your exposure close to your liking, then nail the focus and take the shot when your doing time composed landscapes or portraits providing your live subject has a little patience and not like my ants in your pants grandkids ! :p

I sold my 7D after i purchased the 60D since the articulating swivel screen really makes it easier using this LV method without using a tripod with these MF lenses. At least for me it does.

Some folks do complain after changing the focus screens about it being darker when & if they use some of there slower AF lenses at 5.6 to f8. But you can ask around and get variable opinions about that subject.

Regards, ;)

The Almighty Dollar & the profits Canon and other vendors make off the screens i would assume is the primary reason.

Can you imagine in 1 years time Globally what folks spend on these screens and even more so now since alot of people are attracted to the modern Zeiss ZE line-up and vintage MF lenses. Anything to make the focusing easier for some will be purchased and the manufacturers know it.

Example:

The 7D its not as easy as that...id recommend he look into a different camera body if he really is considering MF

The 7D's focusing screen cant even accurately portray DoF with any lens faster than f/4....

The only decent way I've found is to use liveview, but thats not good for -all- subjects...

Well that is silly not being able to change the focusing screen by yourself. You can do it with almost all other Canon bodies.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

its not that you -cant- its that its a bit more involved because of the LCD overlay and everything

It doesn't look like it takes a rocket scientist to replace the focusing screen on the 7D. Here are instructions and example usage shots:

Just a little FYI - and no, I haven't tried it myself.

If only I could find one for a reasonable price.... XD

But there are certainly a lot of good MF lenses, I just have a hard time seeing this one as someone's first
