It doesn't look like it takes a rocket scientist to replace the focusing screen on the 7D. Here are instructions and example usage shots:

Just a little FYI - and no, I haven't tried it myself.

None of the following AF screen shots there look focussed?

I have never changed my screen. AF confirm adapters can help a lot of people.

If only I could find one for a reasonable price.... XD

But there are certainly a lot of good MF lenses, I just have a hard time seeing this one as someone's first

1st, Keep looking everyday and maybe even twice a day or just call KEH.com and tell them to place you on a waiting list when & if they get a CY 35-70/f3.4 Vario Sonnar in and give it a BGN rating. [Bargain] The BGN lenses are IMO the best buy for sure after gasrocks convinced me, and he should know if you glance at his gear list !

It was the first MF lens i purchased and like gasrocks titled this thread it certainly was my Gateway just recently to the additional MF lenses below:

Oly Zuiko 24/f2.8 MC = Added this multi-coated lens to the list today. S/N # 209588
MIR24 35/f2
CY 35-70/f3.4
CY 50/f1.7
CY 85/f2.8

Regards, ;)

Right now I'd guess many people's first MF lens is the Helios 44-2 but I doubt it inspires like the Zeiss zoom does.

Huh, someone else told me it was a much more involved procedure than this
