Master and slave

I would like to ask this this question about using my built in Canon Rebel Xs flash as a master and YN467ETTL flash as slave.

Say I want to shoot portraits and I put my YN467 in a shoot troughh umbrella to my subject`s left or right side set on slave and use my built in flash as master.

Will I still get the hard shadows from my camera`s flash or can I dial down my master flash trough FEC way down?

And will the flashes work in ettl mode?

Your slave flash will not work in ettl if you are using the pop up to trigger it. You must set the slave flash to S1. You can reduce the power of your pop up using the in-camera settings so you dont get harsh shadows. As you know the slave flash must be in line of sight to to the pop up master flash inorder for it to trigger. This gets tricky when using an umbrella.... for this exact reasonI went the radio trigger route.

You need to use S2 mode on your remote flash. I do not think you can place the popup of your Rebel in manual mode to eliminate the pre-flash that is fired in eTTL mode. If you use S1 the remote flash is going to fire with the pre-flash and this will be too early. Use S2 mode.

Thanks, My bad. I couldn't remember if it was s1 or s2... been awhile since I have done it.
