When I first saw this bird in the shadows, the crest made me think of crested flycatcher. I never saw it from the front, but it doesn't seem to match anything in my guide book. I'm sure it's a simple ID for the real birders here. Shot in Abilene, TX.

Looks to me like it could be a Lark Bunting, male, non breeding... pretty little guy.

I concur with Dave. I saw a group of Lark Buntings (non breeding) years ago near Abilene and haven't seen any since. :(

If you fellows say it, I'll go along. My book shows no crest at all on the lark bunting. Maybe a juvie?
