I'm looking to get a macro lens after I had to sell my Sigma 105 as money got quite tight after my old camera died. I'm now hoping to get back into macro stuff but still don't have that much money for an AF macro lens. I figure savings can be made since the Sigma was damn near useless AF wise for anything moving and for macro I always used MF.

So I was thinking of getting some kind of old manual macro lens that's of good optical quality but reasonably inexpensive. Ideally it would be around the 100mm or greater mark.

I gather the Canon 135mm f/2.8 (FD) is a good lens but I'm not able to source one so having scoured the web for information (the only information was generally for shorter lenses and only a few mentioned longer lenses)
My googling and what not suggests the Vivitar 90mm f/2.5 is a good lens, but what about the f/2.8 version?

Do you folks have any recommendations on the longer macro lenses?

Price range would be up to about £100, could maybe push it to £150.

Might work ok but remember you will have to change aperture manually which normally means pre-setting it and working with a slightly dim viewfinder. Suspect I would actually invest in a set of auto ext tubes and use them with your 28-70mm lens.

I have owned a Vivitar 90 2.5 and it was a good lens. In the end, I sold it and use old enlarging lenses on a bellows or M42 tubes. If you are okay with stop down aperture setting this can be an attractive path back into macro.

Here is an article on Vivitar and enlarging lenses.

This is an example with a 135 enlarging lens on a bellows.

Got it for £80 - should be arriving but my FD/EF adapter might take a bit longer to arrive, you'll be pleased to hear I ordered the glass free one!
