Hi Group:

As much as I enjoy using my G6, it's time to add a DSLR to my collection of cameras. I've looked carefully at the 350D, but something about it just doen't work for me. Really just a "feel" sort of thing, perhaps the plastic body? After further investigation, it seems that used 10D's are easily found in excellent condition for around the same price (or less) as a the 350D. I do like the feel of the 10D, have read all the reviews, and it seems like a perfect adjunct to my collection. So, my question is, are the any reasons not to grab a 10D, any special things to look for in a used one, such as hidden defects, problem areas. etc.? TIA for any advice you'd care to offer. I'm an experienced 35mm SLR user, and have gotten better at using CS2, and am really looking forward to this new venture.

Buy a 300D (drebel) and apply the WASIA hack. Then you have a 10D.

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional
Full frame and some primes.

I enjoy my 10D for nearly two years now.
It's a very capable camera.

For the time lag before being ready to shoot, I use to keep the camera alive all time.
When I think that something would be interesting to shoot, I've just to push softly the trigger in order to get my 10D awake.

Its shape is very comfortable, with a great feeling of durability and toughness.

I have Big ED and a strap for the hand.
Add the POTN neck strap and your ready to enjoy beautiful photos !

PeF.

The 10D is a very nice camera, but why not try the 20D? You can find them used in like-new condition for around a grand.

If you can get one for less than a 350D.. then I'd consider it.

It's downsides compared to the 350 will be more about speed than anything else.
But the 10D still has a 9 frame RAW buffer.. really quite good. Where it hurts is the write speed to the cards.. dog slow. But this is only a concern if you do this tyope of fast repetitive shooting.

Wow! So, applying the Wasia hack adds a PC-sync connector to the camera?

It takes a couple of days for it to appear on the camera.

And you'll also see it grow bigger, heavier, become black, the plastic changes to magnesium alloy etc....

With the bargain prices that used 10D's are going for, I can't see choosing a 300D instead. The 10D is a better camera all around, has some features that an un-hacked or hacked 300D doesn't, and with good glass they take very nice pictures.
Check this gallery:

Every image in there was taken with a 10D.
I am moving up to a 5D, but will keep the 10D for good lighting conditions and some tele work. I may convert it for IR later.

The 10D is an awesome camera. If you are shooting sports, however, there will be some shots you will miss. I still think the 10D is superior to any other Canon dSLR on the market today in color accuracy. We use ours for snap shots and some landscape shooting and anything else we don't need the speed for. I do not plan on selling mine any time soon.

If you mainly shoot low ISO photos that don't require a lot of "speed" then the 10D is a great camera. The 6.3MP sensor is awesome all the way up to 400-800ISO. However, the higher ISO performance of the 350D is far superior.

nope. no reason to not love the 10D. ...come to think of it, I don't think I've EVER heard anyone with a 10D, complain about it. They are solid, reliable machines.

That's a downgrade, because the 10D is still far superior to the 300D even with the hack. Speed, build, and layout of controls. It's purposely that way because it was priced to be the low end camera during that time. 1DMKI, 10D, 300D.

Now if we are talking about the 350D, that's a new generation that fits with the 20D gen. 1DMKII, 20D, 350D
