The histogram is really useful in judging your exposure. And yes, no two histograms are ever the same. Basically, you don't want your highlights blown and shadows crushed bcoz' you'll lose detail in your image.

Let's use this image for example. I'll look at the scene and evaluate the light first. The sun is behind me lighting up the pier but, you also see shadows under the pier. Now, I know for sure that I don't want to lose detail in the highlights. Can you tell me which is the brightest part of the scene?

QUOTED IMAGE

I would say the water or sand area...

The sand is bright but, the correct answer is the water. :)

Sadly the singapore street noodles pic looks a bit weirdo...the lighting went different when it came :( I think that messed it up and gave the weird highlights

ok now after you determine the brightest part how do you translate that to the histogram? I assume a histogram is for the whole photo not for the AF area only...

if the bright area is bigger like if I am shooting the sky with very minimal foreground..then I should expect the histogram to touch right correct?

or you don't really allow the histogram to touch either side?

It all depends really. That pier shot will be pretty much even but, more toward the shadow side. I try to expose to the right as much as possible. You also have to know that the histogram isn't accurate. It's approximate. :)
