At first I was wondering why there was motion blur on the kids face, until I read your comments. Nice shot in general and good timing with the bat swing. As expected the Canon tele delivers a very good quality image.

You may possibly get a broader response from various camera owners if you post to the Share forum that Pekka has provided.

All I have is the tele 1.75x. Want the wide, but have to balance photo investments against likelihood of my wife filing for divorce. :-) (Shhhh...420ex flash is should arrive early next week.)

Anyway, I really like the Canon tele - sharper than the Tiffen 2x I used on my Oly 2020z, and of the tele options that I'm aware of for the G3 (Canon, Kenko, and Tiffen) the Canon provides the widest zoom range w/out vignetting. (The Tiffen will vignette a bit even at full zoom, unfortunately.) Got the lens from www.chumbo.com (external link), if I remember correctly - prompt service, no problems.

So yes - I would recommend the Canon tele very much. Also the Lensmate adapters (58mm for use w/the tele, 52mm for lens protection/UV filter).

http://www.lensmateonline.com (external link).

You can see info on G3 lens options when paired w/the lensmate adapters on the lensmate site.

Ha Ha Dana,i sympathise about the divorce bit, i went shopping with the wife today hoping to make a detour into our local camera shop but you know it's NOT a good idea when you've just bought the G3 & she gives you THAT look [I dare you it says].
Thanks for your answer, could i ask you 1 more related question please,
Does the tele adaptor stop the camera being a compact easy to carry camera, bearing in mind i have a D30 with various lenses already. Is the added weight ,size also balanced out by it's usefulness,Thanks for taking the time to answer,Trumper

Trumper, I just got the Tele lens and am sending it back only cause I ordered the wide angle and they sent the wrong item. I have the Lensmate 58mm adapter and when I put on the tele lens, the camera starts to look more and more like a SLR. There is no way, I would call it a compact take it anywhere camera. But I can say this, It looks damn good with all the options on (420ex and tele lens). I am returning the lens to get the wide. I would rather have the wide angle then the tele lens. I tried it out and I can also say this. I had to be at 4x zoom to get all the vignetting to disappear. The quality of the pics were excellent. No complaints but I think the wide angle lens will be more useful on my cruise that I am going on next month. Hope this info helps. Later

I bought the Canon wide angle and the tele and can recommend both as it really gives you more scope, but the days of carrying a compact digital are gone I carry all the stuff with me as I know sods law will come in to play when I need the lens I left home. I also like the fact that it is more SLR like.

If you buy from a shop watch for the code they use as the shop I used buying the wide angle ordered the one for the G2 which is incompatible, it took them 3 times to get it right! The tele was ordered from the net as I could not bear a repeat ordeal and had no bother.

The tele vignettes a fair bit to start until you zoom out so you have to watch out when zooming in/out. Also using the viewfinder is reduced considerably I keep both eyes open and target off centre when trying moving shots which is a bit fiddly.

I would like to have another lens mount adaptor as it gets fiddly unscrewing lenses off and on.

On vignetting and the Canon tele and lensmage 58mm adapter- you can back off fully zoom w/out vignetting, so saying you have to be at 4x zoom to avoid vignetting isn't correct. I can't tell you exactly how far you can back off, but you can see examples at www.lensmateonline.com (external link).

As for size, the G3 itself is the largest of the digciams I was considering, so when I chose it I knew that I was getting into a larger gear situation in general. When you add the tele and adapter you have enough to fill a small/med beltpack. I actually just got a new Loewpro beltpack today that will hold my G3, tele, mini-dv camcorder, and a few other tid-bits. I got the "Sideline Shooter" - best fit for my space needs and design requirements (low profile beltpack w/easy access).

I also have the 52mm w/a Hoya UV filter so that I can quickly switch adapters. I don't leave the 52mm/hoya on all the time recently, as the camera fits in my small beltpack better w/it off.

I got the G3 in part for the 4x vs. 3x zoom that many other cameras max out at (unless you move up to even larger ones like the Nikon 5700 or Fuji S602). I "lug" the tele along to sporting events, hikes, and other places where I think it may be more useful. At social and other events I don't usually bring a zoom - the 4x is more than enough. If you don't bring gear w/you it ain't worth buying, so you may want to stick w/just the G3 for a bit to see how you deal w/taking just that along. If just the G3 is "enough" then you may want to skip a bunch of add-ons.

When the 420ex flash arrives I'll have another bit of gear to have to decide on as I head out the door. :-)

Great shot! The only drawback is the purple fringing. I suppose this is caused by the smaller f-stop.

Thanks for the comments, drisley.

The only drawback is the purple fringing.

What purple fringing? It's the Diamond Backs - their uniforms ARE purple! ;-)a
