Borrowing a 7d today to shoot some soccer - it is sunny. What metering mode do you suggest?

If the weather is clear and sunny, metering won't make much difference.

First pick the aperture you want (usually wide open for shallow DOF) and a fast shutter speed (1/1250 or faster since the light will be nice). Before the game, take a couple shots of a player who has on some white clothing. Adjust your shutter speed, ISO and aperture until the white article is blowing out (per the histogram) and then back off 1/3 or 2/3 stops. Then you are all set, shoot the entire game with those settings.

Unless it clouds up or the sun goes down the lighting will be constant for the entire game. Using M mode with one expsure setting will save you a lot of hassle in post processing. Most people who shoot outdoor sports find that M mode is the fasest and simplest way to shoot.

Shutter priority has an advantage for stopping fast, unpredictable motion.

Shutter priority has the disadvantage of changing your aperture so that more of the background is in focus.

I usually use Av and take some test shots to determine if any exposure compensation is needed. Adjust ISO as necessary to keep your shutter speeds high enough for your purposes. If the light is consistent, M is good. If you have moving shadows it can be awful.

I don't really care about my light meter anymore.
I always take a picture of the ambient to see how much light there is and go onwards with the same setting.
You really don't need complicated metering system because the histogram is there to tell you how to deal with the light in that situation.
It is one of the most overrated components of a digital camera, not worth my preoccupation.
