Okay... I love my 10D, but looking to upgrade to a better used EOS body (keeping my 10D as a second body). EOS-1Ds MKI used bodies are listing for around $4K USD at B&H(a little out of my budget), but the EOS-1D is listing just under $2K( a little more within my budget). If I were to get a 1D, would I regret the lower 4.1MP count vs. the 6.3MP count of my 10D? Is the 1D a "water-proof/water resistant" body w/proper "L" series lenses? I've also thought about going with another used 10D or maybe upgrading to a 20D... but I'm also thinking it would be nice to step up to a 1-series body. Mind you, this is all just "thinking about it" right now, but I'm just looking to read the thoughts of others.

Depends on what you shoot. The 1D does an incredible job for a 4mp camera. Also remember that your camera is only as watertight as your lenses. I don't think any of your lenses qualify.

I went from 10D to 1D "classic" beofre I picked up my MkII...

I'd say the 1D is definitely a worthwhile step up from the 10D. The resolution difference is not as huge as some might think going from 4.5 to 6 MP..
The 1D has it;s famed CCD fresh out of the cmaera jpeg advantage for those no looking to shoot RAW
On the flipside the 4.5MP RAW files are readily able to scale up to larger prints.

And all this without even getting into the speed,. buffer,., AF will blow you away..

Jim's right,. none of your lenses are weather proof.. (except for the 1.4X T-con) but you can grow into that.

get the 1D,. it will become your main camera immediately,. and the 10D will become the back up.

Yeah... I knew that none of my existing lenses qualify for water-tightness, but like most here, I hope to upgrade into those particular lenses that are. "Water-proof/water-resistance" features are nice to have, but not on the top of my list. I'm of the schooling that expensive electronics don't mix with water, so if it's really raining outside or if I'm going anywhere near a large body of water... the camera's are probably staying home or at least away from there.

That's my thinking, too... the 1D would become my "main" use body and my 10D would be around with a second lens on it for wide angle shots or maybe with a prime lens for portraits. I do like how my 10D performs and it sounds like the 1D would out-perform it in many other ways even though the MP count is lower. My 10D is a used body I bought from Adorama... so I found that going the route of "used" equipment can save me a bundle of money for other things such as extra batteries, lenses, food to eat, etc.

I've been actually thinking of this currently owning a 10D. 20D versus 1D. Decisions...... oh and money. Oh and then add a 16-35 on top of that. :p

I'm leaning more towards the 1D only because I want to step into 1-series bodies. I just read up more on the 1D, and it just makes me want it more... "just thinking about it" is becoming more like "I want it now".

There's a lot of things I do like about it. The resolution though, for blowing up photos and high iso, is I guess my only thing that pulls me back.

If you shoot high iso, go for a 20D. The user interface will also be the same as on your 10D.
It does have twice the pixels of the 1D... And while not weather proof, the 10D / 20D will probabely stand up to more abuse than you would normally like yourself ;)
OTOH, the 1D is a fine camera, and a step up from the 10D, but try to find one which as a 'non pro' history. Otherwise it will have a lot of actuations...

Yeah, i've used the 20D a little bit. And the 1D for a moment. I'm into PJ, but I am also diving into the other stuff like portraits and stuff where I could be making money, so its making it difficult to find where I want to go. the 20D does look like the most compromise to what I need with speed and resolution.

I'm with you there... in particular to high ISO. I haven't had any of my photos blown up to a size larger than 8x10 so LARGE blown up photos are really not a worry for me as of now. High ISO is a concern... with the 10D it's pretty noisy at ISO 800 +, I wonder if the 1D is any better? Does the 1D even go up to ISO3200? or as low as ISO50? Need to do more looking into that.

I read the ISO to 1000 is good, but after, its nothing special.

Select ISO sensitivity: *4
• L (ISO 100 equiv.)
• ISO 200
• ISO 250
• ISO 320
• ISO 400
• ISO 500
• ISO 640
• ISO 800
• ISO 1000
• ISO 1250
• ISO 1600
• H (ISO 3200 equiv.)

*4 • C.Fn 3 must be enabled to use the 'expanded' ISO 100 (indicated as L) and ISO 3200 (indicated as H).

Wow... I didn't know that the 1D had so many ISO choices.

Hi,

This makes for good reading. I've got a 300D and although I think I can stretch to 1D MkII I'm thinking of a s/h 1D MkI for now, thinking that it will make an excellent second body when I get a 1D MkII or better later. Then I'd be 100% 1D instead of a 300D back up and 1D MkII main.

Plus, if for some reason things didn't go the way I'd hoped - paid work wise - I'd be over a grand better off ;-)a

Only if it's a II. The early version does not have the necessary o-ring.
