My first ever visit to the Great Falls on the Potomac, just outside Washington, DC, happened purely by chance to coincide with the height of the snowmelt flood, on March 12, 2011. Normally there's lots of rocks to see at the main viewing spot on the Virginia side, but on this day the water covered almost everything.
A couple of days later I went back for better light, and was surprised how much the level had fallen in that short time. I'd taken so many different views from both sides that I was able to compile some comparison shots.
The bridge was closed on the 12th, because the water was so high and it was carrying with it whole tree trunks and all sorts of debris.
Here's one of my best from the 12th.
And from the 14th, here's a panorama of the whole view from the Virginia side.
