Thanks again all. I'll try these various solutions.
One thing I know it's not is heat. I don't shoot rapid fire w flash.

Thanks everyone. I'll check out the battery packs. Rechargeables didn't do very much for me.

Old Ni-cad rechargeables were always a bit of a pain. Todays NiMh rechargeables are MUCH better. They have a lower internal resistance than regular batteries which causes the flash to recharge much faster.

I have Eneloops and they seem to last forever in my 460ii's. I never use non-rechargable batteries in any of my photo equipment (except that funny fat battery in the 602 trigger).
Can those 580's take an external power source?

Yes, click here: http://www.flashzebra.com/products/0155/index.shtml (external link)

it chews up Alkaline batteries at a horrifying rate.

I'll set up a fresh set in my 580 (series 1) and my two 430s. Withing 10 clicks, the 430s are fine but I end up waiting a LOOONG time for the 580 to recharge between shots. It gets to the point where I tell the model to relax until it's ready.

Any ideas for getting some better (meaning faster) recharging?

Thanks.

In this day and age, why in the world are you still using Alkaline batteries? I went out and bought 16 AA Energizer Rechargeable NiMH batteries about two years ago. I keep two sets for each flash (580ex II, 430ex II). I have not spent another dollar on batteries since then. They can be recharged hundreds of times. I also shoot over 400 homes a year, so these batteries get used A LOT and they still hold a strong charge for about 15 homes. By then, I need to swap them out. No way Alkaline batteries could hold up than long.

I do know the 580ex II recycles much faster than the series I version, that is even more reason to go with rechargeable NiMH batteries. We also use them in every device in our house, remotes, toys, flashlights, everything. They make rechargeable NiMH batteries in every size, even 9-volt. There is no reason at all to ever buy Alkaline batteries. Energizer makes a large charger that will charge anything from 9-volt to D to AAA batteries.

Quick question.

Are these battery packs also compatible with the 430 EX-ii?

No, there is no plug in for the battery pack on the 430EX II.
