Thanks again all. I'll try these various solutions.
One thing I know it's not is heat. I don't shoot rapid fire w flash.

Old Ni-cad rechargeables were always a bit of a pain. Todays NiMh rechargeables are MUCH better. They have a lower internal resistance than regular batteries which causes the flash to recharge much faster. I never use non-rechargable batteries in any of my photo equipment (except that funny fat battery in the 602 trigger). Can those 580's take an external power source? I'll set up a fresh set in my 580 (series 1) and my two 430s. Withing 10 clicks, the 430s are fine but I end up waiting a LOOONG time for the 580 to recharge between shots. It gets to the point where I tell the model to relax until it's ready. Any ideas for getting some better (meaning faster) recharging? Thanks. In this day and age, why in the world are you still using Alkaline batteries? I went out and bought 16 AA Energizer Rechargeable NiMH batteries about two years ago. I keep two sets for each flash (580ex II, 430ex II). I have not spent another dollar on batteries since then. They can be recharged hundreds of times. I also shoot over 400 homes a year, so these batteries get used A LOT and they still hold a strong charge for about 15 homes. By then, I need to swap them out. No way Alkaline batteries could hold up than long. 1Ds Mk II, 1D Mk II, 50D, 40D, XT (for my son), 17-40L, 24-105L, Bigma 50-500 EX DG, Sigma 150 Macro EX DG, Tokina 12-24 AT-X, Nifty Fifty, Tamron 28-300 (for my son), 580ex II, 430ex II
