Or, are you saying that your present computer is so ancient that, well, what:)?

Yes, 2007 Macbook, 1 GB RAM and 150 GB hard drive that has only 25 GB left - I dare not burden it with even a trial version of Lightroom as PSE9 was giving me the beachball from hell so often I gave up. Then the Photoshop/Lightroom sale happened and I jumped on it and am now awaiting the new iMacs.

But I think I have a better understanding now after this thread of how Lightroom will handle my raw files. Also, until new computer comes and is up and running I will try to restrain myself from asking too many questions here that I probably wouldn't be asking if I were hands-on. The "what happens to my original raws" was bugging me for the brief time I played with Elements so I needed to clear that up and thanks again to all who have helped me here.

Well, gosh, I guess you really do have an old under-equipped computer! Well, gosh, I'd still like to hope that you could at least get the trial version to kinda run, but I don't know if it will even install with just one Gig of RAM, and of course hard drive space could competely go out the window, so I guess you are on the needed track!

You could try the video tutorials posted earlier. He walks and talks through the processes he does in LR. Another way to get a "feel" for LR besides the book. It's hard to learn a program with just the book and not being able to use it.

Yes, I've been looking at a few tutorials at lynda.com besides just reading.

Hey, thanks. I must have missed the reference to those earlier. I'll certainly check them out tomorrow.

Hey, nothing to get embarrased about! Just imagine how nice it will be to "kick into gear" with the new computer!

But what if I want to open it in its original condition - no previous edits applied - how do I accomplish this?

In LR, hit "reset". In DPP go Adjustment > Revert to shot settings.

Good info here, and it almost but not quite answers a question/problem I have with Lightroom 2.6.
I typically open Raw files into LR and after any work, will export it to Photoshop and then to a pc file. It seems that the next day, all or almost all photos brought into LR in raw are no longer available in LR, and cannot be found when it searches. Even those in LR and not yet exported will disappear. Where could they be going?
Are files not actually stored by LR, and the ongoing thumbnails just there to show what used to be in LR?
Thanks to anyone who can help me solve this.

Well, what you are describing is not "normal" by any means.

When Lightroom imports a Raw file it either keeps it where it is or copies (or moves) it into a new location, according to the options you set in the Import module.

When you Import a file, you can also specify a file name/template, as well as the destination directory name.

From there, any edits you do to a Raw file are stored in the Catalog (not directly applied to the Raw file) and then, when you Export, they are applied to your specified output file.

At no point would LR just move the Raw files or delete them unless you took the action to do so.

So, like I said, what you are describing is not in and of itself "normal", meaning that something else is happening. It's impossible to say what that might be without more information.

Maybe you could do this -- go step by step through your import, develop and export process and see if there is something you do that you have overlooked. And, it could help if you gave us a screen shot of the relevant parts of your import and export dialogs.

At no point should the images just disappear. If you have a folder that has had the images when you are developing them and then you simply execute an Export, the images should still show up in the folder and film strip. If you have the folder open in the Folders panel and no images show, the only "normal" reason for that behavior is if you have a filter set that doesn't show the images (such as a flag filter selected when no images are flagged).

Well, follow those steps and get back to us with any new info and screen shots, and we'll try to help you get things sorted!

Thanks for the info. I'll make a backup outside of LR, then watch each step taken, and see if I can spot where it happens. It's probably something I'm unknowingly doing wrong.

Rene',
By 'pc' I was referring to my personal computer file, apart from LR itself.

Still not clear what you mean. (Might be me though ;))

You're exporting the image? As .jpg .tif .psd or some other extension? Or do you mean .xmp?
