Good info here, and it almost but not quite answers a question/problem I have with Lightroom 2.6.
I typically open Raw files into LR and after any work, will export it to Photoshop and then to a pc file. It seems that the next day, all or almost all photos brought into LR in raw are no longer available in LR, and cannot be found when it searches. Even those in LR and not yet exported will disappear. Where could they be going?
Are files not actually stored by LR, and the ongoing thumbnails just there to show what used to be in LR?
Thanks to anyone who can help me solve this.

Lightroom imports photos into the folder specified (by you) and gives the import a temporary special classiification 'Previous import'. Are you simply importing some new photos before you have finished doing what you were doing to that import session? If so, they are still in the original folder, although they have lost the classification 'Previous import' when the newer import was brought in.
