Spent some time with about 300 of these over the weekend on the Mississippi. Good light and good weather is a good thing !!! ;)

Alan is that "horn" part of the bird or a stuck leaf?

It's something they develop during mating season.

We sometimes are able to get much closer during the summer season in their nesting grounds here.....obviously you can get close now?

Right now they are very skittish in this part of Minnesota.

Gotta be one of the only creatures I've seen that gets uglier for mating season.

Thanks all for the kind words.. Yes I agree they do look a little different for breeding but seem very docile. They were a little skittish at first but just a little patience and some reach, very attainable ... I could not beat the light that day and always wanted to get a few shots.

Nice series Alan! Great job exposing the white parts and keeping the details! Ours haven't arrived yet here, although we thought we saw one in Green Bay last weekend but couldn't be sure.
