I recently lost the Hoya filter I had for my 17-55, and am planning to get a B+W to replace it. Which of these 2 would you get?

If you're going to put a filter on it go for broke or don't bother.

Why get a UV filter? If you want protection get a protective filter.

If you must get a "protection" filter, get the multi-coated one. That's the "MRC" in B+W.

Read all the previous postings here about using a protection filter. There's even a sticky at the top of this forum.

If you don't already have it, I'd suggest you get the lens hood first. It will do far more to protect your lens than a filter ever could.

And, if it were me, I'd want a Circular Polarizer first. It's generally a more useful filter, altho more expensive.

OTOH, I've heard and read that the 17-55, in particular, is one of those lenses that over time can pick up dust inside. I don't know, though, if putting a filter on it will help seal it better (apparently a filter will help seal some lenses better, such as the 17-40/4L).

You shouldn't need a more expensive "slim" filter with that lens. 17mm just isn't all that wide on crop and B+W filters are pretty slim to begin with.

Is there a protective B+W filter that has MRC? Forgive my ignorance here.

You're right that a DSLR already has a built in UV filter, so it's not necessary to add one... However...

If you want B+W, the closest thing they make is a UV filter.

Some other manufacturers are offering clear/protective filters. Including some that have multi-coatings. I don't use them so can't really suggest anything specific.

It's almost unnoticible difference between a UV and/or haze/skylight and clear.

Because I have a 4 month old and a 5 year old that I'm always taking pictures of, and I'd rather them accidentally wipe their hands on my $100 glass than my $1200 glass.
