Hey.
Just wanting to get some advice on what i would need in order to start a basic studio. What kind of lights, reflectors, umbrellas, backdrops etc are best.
I have a canon 7D, and am planning on using 50mm 1.8 lens in order to take glamour photographs... would this lens be sufficient? (i also own a sigma 18-200 os lens) Also, what kind of price (estimate) am i looking at for a studio?

Just after some advice from people who have done it all before :)

Thanks

Look at the alien bee and calumet genesis strobes, they are affordable but still give you a good quality light to work with. I would suggest 2 strobes, two stands, one shoot through umbrella and a softbox. You will also need some method of triggering them, if you want to go cordless. I would think you could get there for around $800.

Shoehole? Thats a new one to me. Your camera has a pc sync port so you could go with a sync cord to one light which would trigger the optical slave in the second. If you want wireless triggers you can look at the cybersync from the alien bee folks, they are great. Or you can consider a bargain option like the RF602 triggers from YN available on amazon and ebay.

Here is a package that Paul C Buff, the alien bee maker puts together. I would suggest getting the ab800 lights which is a minor upcharge. Add a softbox and you are in good shape.

The calumet genesis lights are good as well, I'm less familiar with them as I have bees.

Can you trigger these with something like Cactus v5 ? like you do with hotshoe flashes or is this always a wire connected to your camera somehow?

You can pretty much use any wireless transmitter system. You just need the appropriate cables from the receiver to the flash. Its just a mini plug, if the cactus triggers dont include them, Lon at www.flashzebra.com (external link) can hook you up.

Using hotshoe flashes is a bit different than studio strobes because of the way the lights are made. Studio strobes are bare bulbs lights, hotshoe flashes are focused lens lights. The problem with that is that the light only spreads so far. You can certainly use softboxes, but not particularly large ones. With your YN flashes you will probably max out at around a 30 inch softbox. Because size (and proximity) is a key determining factor in softness you want as big a source as possible. Because of the design you can use a larger umbrella so having one of each is nice. So look for a 45 inch or so umbrella, and perhaps a 24 or 28 inch softbox like the cheetah box, lastolite ez box, or perhaps one of the ebay copies.
