I've gone 16x32 and it looked pretty good. Of course it was lit perfectly and i had no exposure issues. Shot at 200 ISO and in RAW.

You can print as large as you want - it just depends on the viewing distance and your own criteria for a "professional" print.

Six prints at 24x36 bought by a local business. Shot with a 350D. Imaged resized with PS at 180 ppi prior to printing. Standard viewing distance makes them look perfect. Get close (<1ft) and you will start to notice a slight softness to the edges. Shooting RAW with proper focus and exposure makes it possible.

I printed a 24"x36" from an XTi. Resized it in Photoshop Elements with OnOne software. By the time you step back far enough to view the entire poster, lack of sharpness isn't an issue.
