If you have 7D, its flash can work as a master.

Or a 60D, or a T3i - those can do wireless control too. But the OP has a 50D.

If op wants to eventually upgrade to some Flex TT5's for some off camera action, and remote goodness, then his best choice is either a 550ex or 430exii.

its not as much power (less then 1 stop) as ppl claims to be. i think they of the main reason would be Master and external battery. i have both 2x 430EXII and 2x 580EXII. i like using the 430EXII as OCF and when i am out and about w/ the family and friends. 430EX is so much lighter and smaller to carry around. the only time i wish i had the 580EX is when I wish to have my external Battery pack to it. especially when i use it for OCF. i like to have more battery power and faster recycling.

Eneloops, or any of the other brands of low self discharge rechargable batteries. If they say precharged rechargeables you are on the right track. They perform well and dont die in your bag waiting for you to shoot.

There's an Eneloop starter set on Amazon that's a pretty good deal - 32 bucks for eight AAs, four AAAs, and the charger. I've been VERY pleased with my Eneloops, they cycle fast and last a long time.
