Are these just a fluke?
Captured on 2 separate flash cards, always reformatted.

1st pic was taken when I first got my camera and didn't know what I was doing, but the lines in the eyes are kinda odd.

2nd picture was taken more recently

ISO 1600, 95mm, f/2.8, 1/8

ISO 400, 500mm, f/8.0, 1/500
IMAGE: http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/4087/20110408mg3771.jpg

I get some amazingly sharp photos, and then I also get a lot of soft shots. With these 2 images, should I consider sending in my camera? Only 3700 on the shutter so far.

Thanks.

The first image suffers from motion blur. A bright dot, reflected in the eye, becomes a stripe pattern, depending upon movement direction.

The second image looks like a memory card error. If it does the same with different cards, it's probably a problem with the memory card connector or interface electronics in the camera.

For the first one you need a much, much faster shutter speed. 1/8th is not sufficient to stop motion blur or camera shake, especially on a crop body. Not sure what lens was being used but even with IS, 1/8th is too long of an exposure. A general guideline for avoiding camera shake is 1/FL, in the case of the 7D at 100mm that would be 1/100*1.6 or 1/160th. Of course IS will help with this but then you have to consider motion blur caused by subject movement.

+1. Operator error on #1, hardware failure on #2
