After much reading and trying to be a best but low priced as I can:

lightstand (savage air-cushioned 10'): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CC7I8I (external link)

umbrella bracket (flash zebra 0041): http://www.flashzebra.com/brackets/0041.shtml (external link)

umbrella (cowboy studio translucent): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003PEX8XE (external link)

Slave Flash (Yongnuo YN-560): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004GZNBH4 (external link)

Cactus V5 single (trigger & receiver): http://www.gadgetinfinity.com …ctid=17566&cat=317&page=1 (external link)

Does these look like they would work for basic outside lighting for portraits (and very close to the subject?

Thanks.

Yes. Maybe consider the Steve Kaeser umbrella box (http://www.skaeser.com …SOFTBOX-REFLECTIVE/Detail (external link)), though. It will do better outdoors, from a wind-blowing-over-your-equipment perspective, than the umbrella you linked to. Even then you may wish to get some E-Bay sand bags. They come empty, and I filled them by first putting a gallon Ziploc in each pocket and then pouring in aquarium pebbles (the really small ones).

Spend an extra $10 bucks and get a quality umbrella http://www.amazon.com …TF8&qid=1302664389&sr=1-1 (external link)

Just as a rule, avoid anything from cowboy studio.
