So today I was trying to think...how am I going to fill the gap from 35mm to 70mm since I have recently transitioned to FF, not to mention I'd like something that's faster than f4 for indoor use. The lenses I thought about purchasing were the 85L or the 135L for the 5D2. However, little did I know that my 100mm 2.8 macro would serve more than its purpose on the FF as a nice tight portrait, half body portrait lens. Not to mentioned, for its price the IQ is tack sharp. What do ya know, found a new use for my macro lens :) I'm happy...also happy that i didn't have to drop another $1000.

Lesson learned, since I'm a newbie I recommend to others starting out that if you make the switch from crop to FF - look at what you got and try every single lens you have on your FF because you never know what you might have may already suit your needs. :D

Congratulations! The EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM (external link) provides excellent sharpness and bokeh, but I find it a bit too long for indoor portraits on a crop body.

100 is not between 35 and 70, nor are the 85L and 135L you were considering.
The ideal lens to fill that gap is the 24-70/2.8L

If you didnt need a fast AF lens i would have seriously considered the Zeiss 50mp/f2 ZE macro with the 5D MKII makes an awesome combo:

hey fox appreciate the recommendation. Another option is just to use the 17-55 on my T2i. still works like a charm. Would just have to carry both cams w/ me.

Sell the 17-55, buy a fast 50 and pocket the change (if there's any left over, lol). :)

Edit: I just saw in your equipment list that the 17-55 is your only wide lens. I'd still sell it for a 16-35 (mk I or II) or a 17-40, but then again, I've never shot a 17-55 ;) . I just like the ability to be able to swap lenses on my 1.6x and FF bodies. It makes a 2 or 3 lens combo with the 2 bodies very versatile, imo. Take a 70-200, UWA and a fast 50 on the two formats you own and you can shoot just about anything with just those three lenses and a 1.4x TC of your choice. :)

I agree with a few of the posts above.

24-70L if you want a zoom (or 24-105 if f4is is more to your liking)

or

50mm (zeiss, or canon 1.4 or canon 1.2) if you want a prime.

On a 5dII, both these options will be great for you. It'll come down to how much you want to spend, how much you want to carry (24-70 is heavier), how much you want to walk (use a foot zoom).

5DII. 50L. 24-70LII. 16-35LII. 70-200is2.8II. 100L 135L.

My advice is to not worry about "filling gaps"; you may not need 36-69 mm. My quote---"Fill needs, not gaps." I have no lens longer than 200mm and never have. Don't need it.
