The IR ones are kind of useless when you don't want to be in front of the camera or are trying to get a pic of the family with small kids and don't want to be there pointing the remote at the camera in the pic... I use it from behind the camera with no problems though you need to be close. In front of the camera, as you know, you have a much longer range. I'm No Rocket Surgeon
