Another vote for a 2nd 7D. Sharing everything is just too convenient, and cheaper in the long run.. though the initial layout might be greater. If not a 7D, i would say a 1D Mk II. Although aged, it's still an excellent sports body(fast AF/burst, rugged, hurricane-proof lol).. the AF is sweet! Actually.. ISO 3200 would be pushing it on the 1D II.

I also thought the 1D2 would be a little behind compared to today. The price isn't bad, but I don't see the justification of an N which is essentially the same price as a 7D.

Save and get a 1D3 or go with another 7D. You won't be happy with anything else, in my opinion.

I thought about the 1D3 but the cheapest I've seen them are ~$1600 with the average at $1900. Thats a little more than I want to spend because that extra $4-800 can go towards more gear ;)

Get the 1D3, realize how great it is and make your 7D a back up

I already know how great it is. I've used them at work as well as the 1D4. I love the 1D series, but I can't justify the costs at this moment. I wish the 7D had voice recording and AF point attached spot metering though.

jmweb wrote in post #12212348 (external link)
I was gonna say the 5D for a backup but by the sounds of it you shoot more zoom then wide so perhaps another 7d?

I shoot wide, but not often. Its nothing a 10-22 or 11-16 can't take care of.

Get another 7D

It only makes sense to have as a back-up camera the same camera as the main.

Why?

Aside from what you already mentioned ( shared resources ) ........ FAMILIARITY is most important.

If your main 7D goes down for whatever reason, when you pull out your backup camera you will not have to worry about messing with controls because you will KNOW where everything is.

Just make sure the settings in you backup 7D are the same as your main 7D.

Never could understand why people who *need* a backup camera would choose something other than what they shoot with regularly.

The only reason people would get a second body with a different sensor is for versatility. I agree though, having two of the same camera would be the best for handling.

Kyles wrote in post #12213401 (external link)
7d, you know the camera, and having the same as a backup means no learning curve, if you switch cameras it will be much more fluid if they are the same,

Sounds good.

I would pick up another 7D body.

On a related note, im selling my new (purchased in september) 7D.

 You should PM me an offer I can't resist. I'm keeping an eye out on CLP for a refurbished 7D.

Looks like you might be set for your back up camera, I was just about to post a thread asking what's everyone else's back up camera.
If I can score a deal on a 1D3 it'll become my #1 camera, backseating my 5D. I really miss all that the 1 series can do, shouldn't have sold off mine :(

Following up with this thread: I just picked up a second 7D for $1100. It has six months of warranty remaining to boot! I'm pretty stoked on that deal since price increases have pushed the used 7D prices to ~$1300+.

I think you made the right choice, for you. Having 2 cameras with different sized sensors, I have found, is a real PITA, if you are at events using both.

If you're even considering a 7D as possible and then throwing in the idea of a 1D2N which goes for roughly the same price used, you might as well go with the 7D. You know the system, you know how your FoV will be with the 2nd body already and seem to get great results with your current body judging by the increase in assignments. Might as well go with what you know and what produces the results you're looking for.

You made the right choice. I started with a 50D. After the 7D came out I added it to my kit. 50D on the tripod mounted 500 and the 7D handheld for BIF. When things were really moving I had the ability to mess up when moving from one to the other. Found out about the CLP and added a second 7D.

There is nothing like having two identical bodies when you need to use two bodies at the same time :)

Yeah, I think the 1d2n is a solid camera but the 7d is swell too. Nothing like having the same AF in both bodies.

I think once you have 19 AF points it's hard to go back to 9.

Ok honestly, because I shoot a lot of sports for work and lots of action. I prefer the snappier AF of the 7d. Plus 19 cross type points versus 1? The FF factor is not a priority to me. Not as much as AF tracking.

The 5Dc is like a Brontosaurus whereas the 1D2N is like a Velociraptor :p

I was in the same situation last fall. Instead of swapping out lenses I decided to try both my 7D and 40D attached with lenses.
The 7D's features, handling and image quality made me invest in a second 7D.

40d/50d in my opinion would be a very nice second body. I use it with a 1D, and as long as you take the time to shoot a little with each body, changing between them is not difficult at all!
