I am delving into the deep end of big glass and am confused about something.

When using a long lens, there are sidekicks and gimbals. Sidekick holds the lens and body in portrait orientation and gimbal is landscape. Since they seem to be locked in to a certain position, how do you switch orientation without taking the whole rig apart and using something else?

Or does the tripod collar on the lens allow you to rotate it?

Loosen the tripod collar and rotate the lens...

The 500mm even has detents at each 90-degrees.

k, that's what I figured, but since it's a built in collar, I wasn't sure.

So I guess the main difference between a sidekick or gimbal is the ability to move the lens up and down versus being locked in to one angle?
