I'm an avid bird hunter and I follow my dogs all over the woods and prairie in search of Ruffed Grouse, Pheasant, Huns, Sharptails, and the like for a couple weeks out of every year.

As the years go by, I realize that the dogs are the reason I keep coming back for more - I probably wouldnt go anymore if it werent for them. Im mesmerized by the way they instinctively work a field - their long loping strides as they move from cover to cover and the intricate footwork that starts when they're on a scent, and finally the ultimate reward when they slam on point (or flush a bird, if you've got a flushing dog).

Ill start of with a picture of my German Shorthair Pointer, Toby:

And then, one of my Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Sadie:

edit: swapped in a different picture of Sadie.

Toby is a great looking dog and that is a very nice shot. I'll need to dig out a few shots of my uncle's GSPs for this.

Do these two hunt together usually?

If you can list all your gear in your sig line, you don't have enough stuff.

He's a big boy for a GSP, around 70 lbs of pure muscle - his ribs still stick out sometimes. Wasnt always that way though - my wife hates it that I think this, but he was kind of an ugly duckling - he grew up into a good looking boy though.

When Toby was a puppy, they never hunted together - the Chessie would have taught the pointer too many bad habits.

Now that they are both older, Ill hunt them together for prairie birds but not for Ruffed Grouse. The Chessie usually covers ground within gun range and the GSP will range out anywhere from 50-300 yards. He'll hold point solid until I can come in for the flush with the Chessie most of the time.

I still prefer to hunt them alone because it gets too be too much commotion and I cant really relax with two dogs on the ground, but its tough to make them drive for hours on end to get to the prairie only to lock one of them in the truck half the time. Plus, its fun to show off and run them both sometimes. :)

Horray for bird dogs!!! I love ours, she is such a nut case. She's at the vet now getting a tooth removed, it was all cracked and splintered.

This is Josie. 2 years old. German Shorthair. She was at the Humane society and was terrified to be outside. Now I cant hardly keep her inside. And she is just like me, hates the snow

My uncle has three GSPs and one english shorthair. I took my dog over for some fun last year and got some pictures of them playing. I've never been hunting with them to get action shots.

1. Maggie, the oldest at 8. The best hunter of the group I'm told.

2. Fancy, the English Shorthair. A rescue dog, 2 years old.

IMAGE: http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/pp248/GoWolfpack/5-30-10128.jpg

3. My dog, Snow. Because I love my dog, even though she doesn't hunt.

IMAGE: http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/pp248/GoWolfpack/5-30-10103.jpg

4. Layla, another GSP. She comes from a champion bloodline but she's gun shy.

IMAGE: http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/pp248/GoWolfpack/5-30-10137.jpg

5. The only shot I could get of Belle, at six years old she's the camera shy one.

IMAGE: http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/pp248/GoWolfpack/5-30-10161.jpg

6. Nearly the whole rotten bunch of them.

We were out shooting a dog a couple of days ago and Heidi here decided she wanted to join in, so not my dog but definitely a bird dog!

That second picture of Josie is perfect...she looks like trouble there! :)

Great shots guys, keep them coming!

Got a little too close to this sharptail...this is from 2009 so we forgave Toby, he was still learning! :)

I apologize for the poor photo, scanned from a 5x7 print.

This is Tallahassee Quickstep, a.k.a Tally. He passed away nearly 18 years ago and I still miss him. He was an amazing pointer, retriever and running partner.
