Thanks for pointing me at the discussion on speed, speed. It's a good one (if somewhat confusing, or confused). Upon thinking about it, I may never find out how fast my card really is...my kids want to see the picture I just took before they will let me take another!!

So my advice would be to go for size and quality rather then card speed, especially if you do not have a recent DSLR that can actually take advatage of high write speeds.

I agree with your recomandation completely but as far as D-SLR high speed advantage goes, depending the Camera and how you use it the opposite may be true.

I am finding with the 10D that no matter what card you use,. because of its buffer,. there is no difference shot to shot one card speed to another. The Camera's memory handles things so well that the card speed seems to have no effect on performance. I have yet to run into trouble with "buffer flushing" either, which would be the only time that the cards speed would have an effect. I have a Sandisk 256MB which makes NO claim to speed in the packaging what so ever,. and I have not seen a difference between that and a Lexar 30X 256MB I was able to try for 2 days.

Dana,

On the issue of problems with Viking and SimpleTech and, actually, any major manufacturer of cards, or cameras for that matter: Within this forum alone, I've seen several threads where people report on the problems they've had with their G3's. And over at dpreview, I think, there was a report of the CCD(?) being misaligned on "bunches" of G3's causing photos to print lop-sided. And if you've bought your camera in the last few weeks you should check it for this problem. (To my knowledge, Canon has not addressed this issue to the public.)

Interestingly, at www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/G3P.HTM (external link), they use a SimpleTech 512 to demonstrate for the section on Image Storage and Interface. At www.d-store.com/d-store/product/cfspeed2.htm (external link), Sandisk was one that came in last place for speed and Viking was one of the highest performers.

There are probably a gazillion or two flash cards out there. The major manufacturers have been in business for many years now--competition is fierce, I'm sure. None of these manufacturers can afford to put out bad product. And so long as manufacturers are willing to stand behind their products, can we expect more?

OK, OK, I'm a little sensitive. :-)

Thanks for the heads-up - I think I saw the same thread - shoot a pic of a brick wall w/the camera leveled. Looks ok through LCD, lop-sided when you look at the image. I did a quick check and mine seemed fine...I'm going to do a more thorough check sometime this week.

As for cards, I don't think anyone puts out bad product intentionally, but that bad product does get released on and off again, by almost every manufacturer. Competing priorities (schedule, budget, etc.) and human error account for 99% of those problems.
