This last weekend we had a rare good clear day here in Beijing and so in light of that I photographed this family. I love the fun loving look that Tim park is able to achieve with his family portraits and I wanted to achieve a similar look with this family. The family was great to work with and love the pictures.

Here is just two of the many shots we took that day.

I did not want them looking at the camera but just interacting with each other.

These were shot with 50mm lens at 1.4 to 2.8 with 430EXII for fill flash.

so, you like tim park uh? haha he's great

i think to achieve his looks you gotta boost exposure up a bit, usually dail up the exposure compensation. also boost colors. tim has very vibrant colors to go with that california look

I agree. Looks like you need to sharpen the images a bit, boost the exposure and saturation to achieve that look. Good start!

Hey Sam, very nice! You captured very natural expressions, and it looks like the family had a great time. Looking forward to seeing more. btw, I like the location as well.

You need a little less depth of field as well. Your shooting against very busy backgrounds which is overpowering your subjects and having less depth of field will make your subjects stand out. You hardly ever see Tim blow his backgrounds completely out of focus but he does shoot at larger apertures to isolate his subjects but stopping down enough to keep the subjects in sharp focus. His portraits allow you to see the environment, giving the subjects a place of presence, without that environment being a distraction and drawing your attention away from the subjects.

Wider apertures and longer focal lenths. The edited shot though is better.

the retouched one is closer. now if you wanna put more into it, you can make another layer, boost exposure and colors some more (especially exposure) and mask out the family

Ok Banpreso one more time just for fun then I will move on to other things. Family masked background boosted in color saturation and a soft glow added.

Went to Tim Park's website. Thanks for the tip. He has an interesting style.
I'm guessing Tim's histograms are running up against the bright side of the graph and sometimes the dark side as well.
Your photos are much more controlled, the histogram staying away from the extremes.
