I am a week in NYC to take pictures, and my 2 months old camera starts making problems.

All data I see in the display are rubbish,it seams like the display can not write digital figures the display can not write figures - the top display shows correct data -so does live view.

have any of you had similar error?

Agreed. My first suspicion is a bad CF card.

Are you saying that the data displayed on the back LCD is all garbled up or that the image itself is all garbled up?

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Try a different CF card first. If that doesn't work do a hard reset. If a hard reset doesn't fix the issue it will be time for a trip to Canon.

Did you try a hard reset?

Do you have another camera to take a picture of the viewfinder, so that we know exactly what you're talking about?

My 5D2 hasn't wigged out on me but I don't believe it uses a memory battery. If that's the case just pull the LP-E6 out and leave it out overnight. I did have my old 40D do this to me and fixed it with a hard reset.

Does the 5D MKII not have a CMOS backup battery?

It does has a button battery on the left hand base of the camera, you need to remove the small screw inside the flap where the ports are, then you can slide the cover out.

Sounds like a software issue if live view is working perfectly, what about normal mode image playback is that working ?
Have you tried reinstalling the firm ware ?

That it does. Now I'm prepared if mine wigs out. ;)

The MkII does have a time/date battery and unlike previous models it requires a small screw driver to remove. It's worth a try to see if resetting everything back to the factory defaults fixes things, but I'm doubting it will.

OP, do the focus points still light up?

Why do you doubt it will? As I said (and you chopped that out of my post) I had this exact problem with a 40D and a hard reset cleared it up.

I am on the road - away from home - so I can try to reset firmware. Focus point working okay, also image playback is okay. All is perfect expect the data display line in viewfinder - every thing in on flashlight 2 stars 888888 in ex.time and every thing else. If i put it in greenbox everything works - but - I do not use greenbox
