I hate it when good bands play bad venues (which is most of the time around here). I actually had to break out the flash. I got stuck away from having a good view of Ritzy at her mic but managed to weasel my way over for a few decent looks.

If you miss the chance to see these guys then you just plain miss out.

Most of my favorites from this shoot were images where no faces are visible. That doesn't happen very often (me liking them, that is, I've got plenty of shots with obscured faces ;)) I was trying to have more fun and be less fussy about trying to get that perfect angle and I think it worked out. I'm interested to see what you all think.

On a side note: one thing that is bugging me a bit is that the EXIF for some of these says that the flash didn't fire but I know that it did, or, moreso it had to have for me to have gotten a usable image. Anyone else have this happen with a 7D?

hmm...3 works the best...you can get a clear sense of what's happening, and everything important is in the frame. can't really say that for the others.

i guess i lucked out w/ my lighting...it's good to know the club employees sometimes :D

Yeah, I do try to get everything important in to the frame but these don't bother me in that respect. Hopefully I'm not just trying to convince myself that I'm happy with a less than stellar shoot. I do agree that 3 is the best framed of these, but I've got a particular draw to 4 that I can't explain.

No amount of luck of friendship would have fixed this lighting save being able to set up a few strobes on remotes (which I don't have the dough for at the moment and even here would have been a struggle to position effectively). This and one other joint in town get some good acts, but both are certainly a challenge to shoot in (external link) (especially when the subjects wear black!). I believe they like to call this kind of setting "intimate" ;)
