I have a crop body. Do you think I should sell my 50mm 1.8II in order to collect money to buy a Sigma 30mm 1.4? My only other lens is the 18-55MM 5.6 II.

Can't you save up a while longer and keep the 50 and get the sigma?
If thats not an option, then consider whether 50mm is the right focal length for you, and if you do decide you need something wider, then yes, do it. If you're happy with the focal length, then sell it and get a sigma 50 1.4 .

i did exactly that! i found the nifty fifty to be too long, so i sold it in favor of the sigma. just got it last night, and couldnt be happier. of course remember that the nifty fifty will only offset the sigma so much.... you are still looking at 3-350 out of pocket

I intend to sell mine as soon as I can afford the 30 mm. I rented it and found it a much more usable indoor lens on a crop body. I have an 85/1.8 for indoor headshot/portait or larger venues where more reach is needed and find that works well. I think the 30/85 combo may work well for me. My 50mm/1.8 just isn't as sharp as my 85 or the 30 I had rented.

When I had both, I used the 30mm 10x more then the 50mm. I (me, not you are someone else) found that 30mm on the crop sensor bodies was a more useful field of view. On the 5D I have, I like the 50mm f1.4 (traded the 30mm for it). Now that I have the 7D I want another 30mm sigma to compliment the 50mm f1.4.

So, I think a lot of people would love having the 30mm on a crop body. =)

Keep 50mm and on future buy eventually the sigma 30mm.
So no number 1 and no number 2, so i haven't vote for these options.
Also even if you sell the 50mm f/1.8 you can hope to obtain only few money so i don't think is a great idea.

Nota:
Also the lack of quality control on the sigma lens is another big problem.

You will find "uses" for both lenses.

Keep the nifty 50mm AND GET the Sigma 30mm...

I just got mine yesterday and when in a house, low light, parties, dslr video etc.... it is very workable.

I will say that "I KNOW" I will STILL use my Sigma 50mm 1.4 when I am further away from the subjects. So for me, I know there will be uses for both.

I started out using the 50mm FIRST, then just last night I got the 30mm.

There is a noticeable difference in the 2 lenses if you have been using your 50mm for awhile.

Keep both!

Nifty can grab $100 and for that I'd just save a bit more 'cause I think there's a big difference in 20mm of FL. You may not use 50 much but for the price, I'd just keep.

sure, but on a crop, the 30 is MUCH more useful than the 50. plus you get HSM

not to take anything away from your very valid point, but OP only has the kit 18-55, so perhaps having 2 primes of similar function would not serve him as well as choosing one prime over the other, and getting better glass for general use

Like what others have said, keep the 50 and just save for the 30.

The 30 is slightly faster and slightly wider but A LOT more useful for me. Selling the 50 to fund a 30 will do practically nothing.

If your 50 was the 1.4 version then I would advise doing a straight trade. Since that's not the case, keep the 50.

I would keep it unless I really needed $80 or so for 30mm f1.4.

The Sigma is a superb lens, the build will be much better than the 50 1.8

As the person who sold ekinnyc his Sigma 30, I can say the focal length works out much better. The HSM makes a HUGE difference with focusing speed and noise, and the f/1.4 makes it extremely effective at low light focusing. It was on my lens the majority of the time I had it, and for good reason.

At the same time, I wouldn't sell the nifty because you wouldn't get much back for a used one, and even if you don't use it too often...It's a lens, it's tiny, and it's fast. Even though I hardly ever use 50mm, it's always there just in case.

I've heard the Sigma 30 is a great video lens also, but my 30D can't attest to that!
