Googling hasn't helped me with this one: I'm curious if an Elinchrom baby deep octa with a deflector but without either diffusion layer would perform comparably to the MUCH more expensive Mola Setti, either silver or white interior version. The width and depth of these modifiers is definitely comparable hence the question ...

Does the Setti have the rings in it? Like the ripple effect rings within the contour of the inner dish?

Yes, Brendan, and that's one of the obvious physical differences between the Setti and the baby DO.

Please post the conversation here Dave, I've been thinking about this too. The 39DO is a little big for my location work

I use the baby Deep Octa with just a deflector relatively often (it's my travel kit when flying) and I really like it. While I've got no experience with the Setti...my owning the baby d/o is one thing that has sort of kept me from looking more seriously at the Setti, given they seem to be quite similar.

Thanks for weighing in, Jeff. What you've said aligns with my expectations.

I'm suprised how few samples from the baby DO I've been able to find; especially taken with a deflector and no baffles. This lovely shot from Jonathan Dear comes close:

But here he was using a custom-installed Mola PAD rather than an Elinchrom opaque deflector:

I wish I could help you with close-up samples, but as you know...my work tends to be full-length, usually featuring the location....so I'm no help!

My apologies, Brendan. I didn't mean it that way at all.

It might be hard to find comparisons because people tend to go one way or the other. I have the 22" Kacey BD and the 39" DO. I wanted *something* in the 27" range for studio and location work, and I opted for the 27" DO. I like the versatility as it comes with a white deflector, inner and outer diffusers, and the different combinations offer different looks. Plus, I love the portability. I would guess that the setti with deflector and baby DO with deflector only will look different. Question is, how important is this difference to you? If you put a sock on the BD and diffusers on the DO, the light will probably start looking more similar.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, I own both the silver setti and the 70cm DO eli. I bought the DO as a sort of travel option to the setti.

When work winds down more into winter I might try and do a comparison. I love the size of both. I have used bigger dishes and smaller and I like the coverage I get from ones this size.

Ive only really used the eli on 1 shoot - here is a more full length from the eli DO: http://www.flickr.com …629681636/in/photostream/ (external link)

but as mentioned, Ive replaced the included white eli centre deflector with the Mola PAD one.
