YouTube is sending people who run afoul of its copyright rules to “Copyright School.”

If Google gets a copyright notification about a YouTube user, starting today the person will have to watch a tutorial video and take a four-question multiple-choice quiz about it. YouTube also redesigned its copyright help center to teach YouTube users and copyright owners about the laws.

Can we get these idiot bloggers who steal images and sometimes even steal their "blog" from others trying to pass it off as their own work enrolled next?

I like the idea. Not to heavy handed and hopefully it will enlighten casual offenders.

Casual offender? No such thing.

That's the problem, Well they only do it a little bit, we shouldn't be to hard on them.

It was there first time, just tell them it's a no no and they'll learn there lesson.

If it's not yours, leave it be!

When they take it hey know it's not there's and hey also know if it's not there's, it should be left alone.

Sadly they think there entitled to it. Casual offender! There is no such thing...

I think there's a difference between some kid who doesn't understand the concept of copyright and a person who understands it and grabs anyway. How much did you understand copyright when you were 14? I didn't understand much when I was that age. If the computers and Internet had been around then, I probably would have been grabbing and using everything that struck my fancy; then I would have been surprised if anyone objected.

Why do I think that this is not to protect anyone except YouTube?

I agree, there are those that blatantly ignore a copyright but there are many who just don't know better.

I'm sure there is a lot of that as well. But think of it from YouTube perspective. With millions of clips there is no way that they could insure that none violate someones copyright.

Well, of course. This is another brick in their "we are doing our due diligence" defense for any future court action.

So? "Enlightened self-interest" is a far more reliable response from a corporation than depending on altruism.

As far as YouTube, it's a blanket "CTA"

They could care less until someone points it out to them.

As a young person, copyright is silly is the digital age. Yes I'm a photographer. If you put something out on the internet expect it to be stolen.

THM, there are -fully matured and educated adults- who still debate over copyrights and what is expected, the implications, etc.

This isn't a topic a 12 /14 /16/18 can be expected to grasp to its full extend. Your argument is based on your personal understanding/experiences and opinions/morals and we could sit here all night long over a beer debating it out, but sadly theres is no internet beer yet :( Which also goes to say that youtube is clearly doing this for their protection and to try to lower the amount of cases/feedbacks/questions/complaints, it has to deal with.

I should point out that as a 12, i didn't "own" Anything at all. Everything i played with was my parents, i lived in their house, watched their tv, ate their food. Trying to teach me a concept about goods that someone else owns would of been pretty darn impossible, there was no concept of me owning something.

My education was a simple "Don't do this or else you're in for it." Morals didn't quite grasp my fancy t'ill a few years later when i could get away with things but felt bad about them and had to ask myself why. Putting a song online doesn't give you a "bad" feeling, if anything its conditioned to give you a "good" feeling, because your friends are now enjoying it with you, and you're all talking about the same thing and having fun. Then you wonder why its so rampant.

Aslong as the person isn't making money, or isn't degrading the value of what i do, i have no objections to them using it. Use my picture for your youtube music, but it'd better be a good song!

It's definately the computer generation......started with Napster and songs, progressed nicely with photography...."if I can see it or hear it....it's mine!".....there is no acknowledgement of any sense of artistic ownership! Only thing to do is post what you don't mind being stolen, watermark, secure sites as much as possible.

If you put your car on the street, expect it to be stolen. The fact that you acknowledge it as "stolen" indicates that you know it's wrong...so you apparently believe laws against auto theft are silly when there are people who know how to steal cars.

Maybe you also feel the same way about identity theft? If I can steal it, laws against stealing are silly?
