Drew,
Nice capture from the stands, even nicer with the proprer corrections made above. And I agree maybe even a bit tighter would be nice.

Not sure yet, but I am not expecting any thing other than to be allowed to have my name put on the frame for recognition.

As far as this part goes though, take some of that recognition down to one of his sports bars and see how many hotwings and tater tots it will get you. Oh yeah they dont take recognition for payment    .....

But seriously, do try to get compensated for you work. Compensation does not always have to be $, however thats the one I like most. And sense your not of age an open beer tab's not going to work for you either. If not $ get creative in how you may possibly get compensated.
Oh, did I mention you should be compensated for your work.

^^^Thank you, and yes I do plan on meeting with the guy before the pictures go up to see if any compensation will be given. Gonna do my best to get something for it!

Thank you for the tips I will try again, still getting used to PP.

Also I would appreciate if you leave your thoughts about me and what I use my camera for out of this thread. I understand your view but I was not talking about luck on my part just the luck of the timing of the shot. So instead of offending someone who has worked all season on NHL photography, worked with numerous players, worked with a carolina hurricanes sports writer, and now will have a picture going up in Raleigh area sports bars I am proud of this moment so lets not take a jab at me starting out. I'm sure you started out at one point in your career too.

Drew

Whoa - where's this coming from?

Post #1 of thread from you

please CC on the picture are more than welcome!

CC stands for comments and criticisms - you asked for them, you're getting them. Re-read all mine, they're constructive . I don't take a single rip at you.

Post # 5 of thread from you

a lot of times its all about being lucky and just having the timing to know when you have a better opportunity of "getting lucky"

I agreed with your statement you got lucky. We were you working the game? I assumed no, or you'd be shooting from a photo hole at ice level for a better perspective. That not the case? So you had full credentials, free admission and were shooting from the first deck? - then it's my mistake.

I was not referring to getting lucky to have a shot going up in a restaraunt. I was just referring to the luck of the timing of the shot. Sorry to anger you just seemed like you were taking a stab at me.

I apologize.

Edit: have you seen the redone edit, I followed the steps you suggested. How do you think it came out?

Every time I look at it this is what I think, not sure how to fix it, but then I look at the Trashers glove where it says "warrior" and it looks like that is where the focus hit?

What you think?

Not much you can do after the fact. I am horrendous with photoshop but isn't there an unsharp mask function you can goof around with?

Appears like motion blur. your pan followed #6 and parts of him appear sharp. the closer crop accentuates it.

You think I should crop out a little bit more but not to the extent of the first photo posted?

At 1/320s it's motion blur, and no amount of post processing will improve it. Next time, bump your ISO up to 1600 and double your shutter speed (to 1/640s). You can see Hainsey is much sharper, but he was probably not moving as fast as Cole.

ISO 1600 on my Rebel XS will kill this picture and all of the others. I hate shooting ISO 1800 but Phillips arena had terrible lighting so it was the best I can do. I usually try to shoot about 1/400 and don't usually get too much motion blur, but I can't wait to upgrade bodies to get better ISO performance.

Not so fast to blame your tools, craftsman. I started shooting digital with a Rebel XT many years ago, which had even worse high ISO performance than your XS, yet it did fairly well at ISO 1600 once I incorporated Noise Ninja into my workflow. You can download a trial of Noise Ninja and experiment. You'll be surprised how well it works cleaning up images you would have otherwise thought were unusable.

Here's a relatively old article on NN, but even though it's a bit dated, the concepts are still valid:

Would this require me to shoot raw? Cause I still haven't switched over to that from JPEG yet and still reading and learning about it before I do.
