Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could help me with using this Metz as a slave, I'm looking for a pretty cheap option if possible. Will I also be able to use my Canon Speedlite 430EZ to trigger it?

Thanks in advance

Ryan

The Metz 45 flashes do not have an optical trigger nor radio trigger. You must make use of

  • an external receiver (radio, or IR) connected to the flash via PC cord, paired with an external trigger connected to the camera via hot shoe (or hotshoe-to-PC adapter), or
  • simply get an optical trigger (which would be triggered by any bystanders shooting with flash) connected to the flash via PC cord.

Thanks Wilt,
Could you recommend any cheap radio/IR triggers and receivers?
Also how would I connect the flash to the receiver as it doesn't have a PC port?

The New CACTUS V5's "Transceiver" Duo
They are cheap transceiver, so you can use the unit as transmitter or receivers, and use normal batteries.

Exist cheap accessories if you want use the cable:
Hotshoe and Shoe Adapters (external link)

Or you can mount your flash over your unit (despite i don't like much this idea).

Wow these look great, definitely what I'm looking for, thanks!
Still unsure of how I can connect the transceiver to the Metz flash, as I can't see anything on that link and the Metz has neither a PC port or a male hotshoe?

I use two off camera flashes on my 450D. You can get a set of Yongnuo RF-602 triggers with two receivers or use sync cord (hot shoe and flash shoe adaptors - about $10)

The Metz 45 has its connector cord which plugs into the flash on the right side of the flash body (as viewed from rear) and has a standard PC end which plugs into the camera or flash trigger. It normally comes with a new flash; replacements are readily available for units purchased used without that cord.

I have the SCA cable for the Metz to use with my Bronica ETRsi, will this be safe to use if I'm not using it with the ETRsi?

The Bronica ETRSi adapter for the Metz 45CL4 is to provide TTL flash compatability off the surface of the film, and is absolutely not ETTL compatible!

  • Film TTL tells the flash to 'shut off light output' as soon as the in-camera photosensor determines 'enough light' during the actual exposure.
  • ETTL tells the flash to first output a preflash, then it instructs the flash before the exposure to output a predetermined quantity of light.

The intelligent Bronica ETRSi adapter plugs into the opposite side of the Metz45 body, compared to the unintelligent PC cord connector. (And good luck trying to puzzle out the function of each of the pins in the special connector which is in the Bronica ETRSi body!)

Wow this is starting to get complicated!
So, something like this should be okay to connect the Metz to the V5s? (Which I have just ordered)

Precisely, the kind of cord which I mentioned in post #7!!!

If you do not own a Bronica, put that SCA386 adapter for sale on the used market. They used to sell for $180 when new, and I bet you could get $60-80 for a used one today.

Great, thanks for all your help!
Oh that's good to know, but I'm still using the ETRSi I have, love it!

Don't be foolish enough to sell that ETRSi !

BTW, with SCA3201 adapter for Canon makes the 45CL4 a perfect flash with almost flawless Auto flash exposure, surpassing the sometimes inconsistent results you get from ETTL controlled flash. And it is far more powerful than these digital autozoom pretenders with their inflated GN based on 105mm coverage angles.

Don't worry, I won't be selling it! It was given to me by my uncle who used it to photograph my parents' wedding and me as a kid, so it has some sentimental value as well :)

Do you mean the SCA3102? I might have to get this, sometime in the near future.

Do you happen to know any decent cheap light meters I could get?
I have a flash meter but it's not quite what I need.

Yes, Metz 3102 :o

What meter do you own, and what don't you like about it, that causes your interest in a different meter?
