Does anyone know of/can think of an effective way to realistically create the kind of billowy heat ripples that you might see in jet exhaust? I am thinking that a displacement map might be involved, but I am really having a time creating something convincing.

TIA,

Rad

Heh! I would, but I'd be full of hot air:)!

It sounds like a rather exotic thing you're trying to do and I'm not up-to-date on exotic things:)!

Honestly, I have no idea, but maybe this will keep your post close to the top and maybe some all knowing PS wizkid will see it.
Good luck and I look forward to seeing if this is possible.

Have you tried using the Filter>Distort> Wave command> I'm sure if you Google the phrase "filter distort wave heat tutorial" you'll find several tutorials.

I might try puppet warp.

I'll give it a try. took me 5mins. Here is what i get.

Duplicate image layer. Apply Filter-Distort-Glass.

Apply Glass distortion than erase the area you dont want ripples in. You can apply some blur to it. done.

Dang -- you quoted something of me that had a typo -- I hate it when that happens -- I can go back and correct the original, but my goof becomes part of the "public record":(:)!
