If you're a photographer - bring your camera. If not, leave it and bring your phone.

Sorry, I just don't see the point of anyone not bringing a camera, no matter where they're going. I'v never once left my camera behind because I was afraid of theft. Get insurance (you should have that already, esp with the gear you have) and stop worrying about things.

8-)

I did have insurance but it got too expensive. I decided to just join CPS & that money can be better spent on other lenses. I know. I know. it's stupid. oh well. LOL. I wonder if I can get a traveler's insurance for my equipment. I will definitely get it for myself though.

How much was it?? Mine is just over $10/year for every $1000 insured, it is very reasonable.

TRY AND GET A HOTEL / ROOM WITH A SAFE. In mexico one of the maids stole my dads bose headphones.. You never know

BIG difference between Mexico and LV... But yes, using a safe is a good idea. :)

One of my coworkers went with a tour group to Israel and did the bus tour to Jericho (under Palestinian control), he was stalked by this same guy 4 different times, and watched his wife being led away by a boy on a camel. He trucked over to her and got her back to the group, and later saw that same guy talking to the boy. They were part of a petty theft ring found out later, and they were more likely targeting her purse and his camera/wallet. Now that would be scary.

We had some guys stalking us in Dublin when I was walking around with my camera...I let em know in so many words I knew what was up, they quit.

Hey!

I am heading to vegas and I was wondering if it's safe to bring my 5DII - I'll be bringing the 24L and the 35L. Though they seem to be very close in FL, I find that they give off very different looks.

I am just wondering if it's safe to bring my DSLR to Vegas. I will be walking the streets shopping and touring around. The only landmark that I will see is probably the hoover dam - that's it. Asides from that, I will be going clubbing (probably will be leaving the camera at the hotel during those times), and I will be watching the shows (i.e. vegas circ de sole).

Please let me know! thanks in advance.

(and no. I won't be bringing the X100. I can't - the camera will be with my girlfriend as she is traveling elsewhere while I am in vegas with my friends.)

Yes and Yes and NO you cannot bring in your DSLR into a club without a media pass for coverage of the club at night. Paparrazi is never aloud in our clubs. Plus alot of bad stuff happens in our clubs hint hint and the club would never want some random person trying to hold them liable. No photography aloud in cirque shows either. As far as cityscapes and city walks. I walk around with a 7d, 60d, 5d and even a 1d on the strip. I usually have a 70-200 f/2.8 IS on the 7D and my 24-70L on the 60d and that is my photowalk setup with a 10-22 easily accessible. Heck I have a photoshoot today in downtown las vegas. Click on my fb link to see what Im packing to that. Just know your surroundings and becareful. Its the same as any large city with millions in population and over a million tourists on the weekends. I use a Sun Sniper sling strap as it has a steel cable running inside it so you cant even cut it with a pair of Dykes(diagonal wire cutters). But Ive also never had an attempt of theft either. Maybe its my Jershey Shore Muscle head look, but either way ive never experienced an attempted theft yet. Knock on wood-

This is why I always pack an ASP. Put it with your camera gear and it looks like a monopod. But I usually put it in my checked in baggage. Its easy to carry and hides very well and can inflict serious damage in one swing and and will definately give you time to assess the situation if there is more than 1 party involved. Having some self-defense training with Stick Weapons is also a good idea. Most of my friends who have been held up were held up by a knife or multiple assailants who use numbers to threaten you. Once you knock their leaders teeth out, the rest will think twice.

People talk all the time about using in-room safes whether on a cruise ship or in a hotel. I take so much stuff there is no way it would fit in any of the safe's they provide. I've been around quite a few places, and honestly, I have never had anything that was left in my room/cabin messed with. I always have a laptop, and numerous pieces of photo gear with me in my travels. I guess I've just been lucky, or perhaps folks are over-stating the possibility of theft.
The last trip to Vegas....man...I had over fifty pounds of camera and light gear with me. The biggest thing the maid was concerned about was the fact the girls left so many of their clothes and shoes on the bed, she couldn't change the sheets !

These type of thieves that hang out in the tourist hot spots are looking for the easy targets, usually letting them know you're not a guppie is enough...

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get into locked a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon.

A 21 year old model and her best friend seem to think they need a dozen pair of shoes and countless changes of outfits and swimsuits. Who am I to argue ?

Usually, the girls I am with, take their clothing off when I enter the room..

They usually run the other direction when I enter the room ! :D:rolleyes:

I can never understand members who buy decent equipment and are then afraid to take it awaay on trips. There's no guarantee you won't get it stolen in your home town, so take it with you and use it.
