Actually no there's plenty of heat coming out. Plenty of fire going on. When a steam locomotive is run right, there is very very little smoke. It's not as photogenic, but it's almost all steam coming out the stack. 3751 is an oil burner which makes it a little easier to control the fire and get a clean stack. On the return trip, the locomotive comes around a little corner in the distance. They can then see the signal far down the straight track which was green and thus open up the throttle. When they did this they let a little smoke escape as the fire was ramped up as well. She was burning plenty hot the whole way there and back.

Excellent shots and videos.

And for those that think steam is a dead power source, it's still used today. In everything from modern power plants to the catapults used to launch jets from aircraft carriers. Powerful stuff.
