Looking for a semi long prime, got the option to buy a 200mm f2.8 prime, the original not the USM II version, can't find any info for it, can anyone shed some light on this for me.
Thanks

Its the same as the USM II version just with a nice retractable hood...

Really, optically they're pretty much the same, focus speed pretty much the same (IE VERY fast)

if its in good shape at a decent price get it :) I loved my II a lot and the I is just as good

I picked up a second-hand version I from a forum member last year and it's a superb lens - very sharp and detailed images. I sometimes miss not having IS on the lens, but that's my only 'complaint'.

Cheers guys, the lack of IS is not a problem for me, i shoot wide open as much as posible and have a verry steady hand (My hand is better than my spelling, excuse that) Basicly i want a tight portrait lens and the 135 f2 wasnt enough for what i want to use it for and the Sigma 150 2.8 i sold due to being a little soft and AF wasnt acurate (on the copy i had)

I have version 2 of this remarkable lens. I actually think the original version with the retractable hood is the preferable copy. That retractable hood is very convienient and far better that using the hood you have to attach. Right now I own the 300mm f4 and the 400mm 5.6, both which have retractable hoods. I wish there were more lenses with this option.

You'll love the 200mm 2.8. Its my favorite lens.

its a boon and a curse

in the 200s case the original hood is "less efficient" than the detachable one

But i agree i prefer retractable hoods, they take up less space and are easier and quicker to deploy in the field

So 420 AUD Was a good price? No marks on the glass or body, rarely used as only a month after purchase she bought a 70-200 2.8 IS for the IS and kept this lens with plans to use it but decided to sell. I just bought it so should be here by the end of the week. As it's only 300ks from home. And being a female owner I feel it would be a bit better than buying of a bloke as let's face it lady's seem to baby there gear more than guys.

I had the mkI for over a year and loved it. Wicked fast af, great iq, and bokeh at 2.8 was awesome. Unfortunately, had to sell to sell to fund another lens.
