You would need a flash with the infrared AF assist beam

This (external link) Canon flash is probably the lowest price unit you would be able to get

Can you not come up with some other solution than flash? (High ISO? Slow shutter speed? Tripod? Color gels, at least?) I shoot lots of club stuff and it's always a tough lighting environment. Ceilings and walls are often dark and limit bounce possibilities. I don't mind (in fact, generally prefer) some motion blur on performers / patrons / dancers. Even with folk guitarists, I'll shoot slow to get some blur in their hands.

Maybe at least balance your flash with colored club or stage lighting with a full-cut CTO gel or something, setting your camera's white balance to Tungsten, and keeping the flash power as low as possible unless you're going for a particular effect. Shoot RAW for maximum post-processing options.

Enjoy experimenting as much as you can. Lie on your back and shoot up. Climb upstairs or on rafters and zoom down, if you can. Shoot from behind the band into the crowd. The "happy accidents" are often your best shots. Then you can look at the EXIF data to see what you did with your keepers and replicate it later.

But in most situations, nothing annoys performers and patrons more than flashes going off all night.

Finally, HAVE FUN! It will show in your pix!

My two cents' worth.
