Yep, wireless triggers usually don't care about brand. I use Nikon sb-26s all the time.

yup. (to confirm the previous answer) :D

canon has no way of directly controlling the flash though without additional tack on triggers. some el cheapo triggers people have been talking about nowadays are the yongnuo rf-603

This is not a Canon camera but flash on a Pentax. Scroll down and look a the picture in the review of the Cactus V5 wireless trigger:

You'll have to set the Nikon flash manually since Canon can't communicate with Nikon and vice versa. Like everyone else mentioned some cheap radio triggers will work fine.

Some of the Nikon's, like my sb-26s, have an optical mode as well. You could use an on camera flash or a single flash transmitter to fire multiple flashes. There are also infrared triggers, optical triggers, and the PC cord option with a generic hotshoe. Wireless is probably best though, it has less limitations. And yeah, manual flash only regardless.

I think the only flashes you can't use are ones with proprietary shoe designs, like Sony/Minolta.

Flash A made to fit Brand A will never communicate with ETTL flash automation on Brand B camera. The only exception to this statement is if the manufacturer (like Metz or Quantum) offers interchangeable modules to change the compatibility of the flash from one camera brand to another.

Camera Brand B can, at best, trigger Flash A, in Auto mode when the flash has its own photosensor built in, via the two trigger contacts..

If no photosensor in the flash, Camera Brand B can, at best, trigger Flash A in manual flash output mode only, via the two trigger contacts. But the extra electrical contacts must be insulatee so that the flash does not send a possibly damaging signal into the camera, or vice versa.

Yeah, you can mix and match brands and they'll fire. I have a 430ex that I use with them sometimes too.

For wireless flash with purely manual control of flash power (via the flash unit's normal controls only), such a wireless trigger system would suffice.
