Flip a coin....in the case of choosing between these
two fine camera's Both are excellent.

I own both and just could not say which has the edge on the other.
Reading all the masses of information on this topic will inevitably
drive you nuts....Flip a coin...

to compare a 12mp d700 to a 21mp 5d2 isn't fair in the first place....but what is remarkable is that for a 21mp camera the d700 only manage to obtain a tiny edge as you put it... I don't know how you judge IQ for these two camera but from what I have seen the IQ of the 5d2 is better as compared to the d700, isn't better resolution equal to better IQ? e.g. a 0.5mp camera could not deliver the same IQ as what a 5mp camera can...

No, better resolution does not necessarily equal better IQ. It means better resolution. As for noise handling the number of megapixels doesn't matter as much as the sensor size, which for these two cameras is equal.

I've seen images from both cameras and for the size of output that I produce they are essentially a wash IQ wise.

I just want to say that most (in this thread) have said the 5d2 IQ is better with a few exception...but fair enough, everybody is entitle to their opinion.

I'm weird - I love my 5D Mark II:D, Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS Mark II8-), Sigmalux 50mm 1.4, Manfrotto 190CXPRO4 + Manfrotto 804RC2, Gitzo GM3551 + Manfrotto 486RC2

Because most, if not all, in this thread and this forum are Canon users/lovers/fanboys. You will see an entire different opinon on a Nikon forum.

well since the OP ask which one wins in term of IQ I will have to say the 5d2 from all the pic I've seen...sure many will label me a canon users/lovers/fanboys I'm fine with that too...because I came to this conclusion with my eyes and not by being a canon users/lovers/fanboys.... why not we speak with some example first :D

here's a pretty unbias review IMHO but it compares with the mark I
"yes I can tell that the files don’t have that same super-crisp look that my 5D files have"

the 5D Mark II comes offers a sharper overall image throughout the sensitivity range.

maybe you can show some blog/site that compare them site by site and the d700 came out top in term of IQ...and yes for AF the d700 takes the cake no doubt about that but the op is asking in term of IQ...again if you have some site that provide a comparison between these two camera I would like to see it as I want to know the truth.

Not necessarily. On some Nikon forums that shall not be named a member who starts posting that Canon bodies are better than Nikon bodies will have their posts deleted and be banned. I've seen it numerous times when I only had Nikon equipment and posted on those boards.

Having had both bodies I think I gave a fair assessment in my first post in this thread. The bodies are close and both are very fine cameras. For most people when you get this far the decisions are usually made based on the available lenses and for me Canon clearly was a better choice though I sure wish Canon had something similar to the Nikon 14-24 which is an outstanding lens.

Agree, and it's a behavior I find bizarre. You may not get banned or have your posts deleted, but you will certainly be shunned.

There's going to be fanbois everywhere you go I guess, but if as a community we actually are interested in photography first there is really no need for it. I'm just thankful that my two favorite manufacturers have great equipment to choose from and are in a tight enough race that everyone will benefit from the leapfrogging.

Can't wait until we have D800 vs 5DMkIII discussions. They are allows heated right out of the gate.

Won't happen since the D800 will, guessing, be around 17 mpixels and the 5DIII around 28 mpixels so there will always be a not insignificant difference in pixel density.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

It's only the focusing I don't like with the 5D. nikom doesn't feel comfortable to hold. You know, I can compare it when sitting on leather sofa's, the moment I sit on it the quicker I want to get off it. That's how I feel when holding nikom bodies, very strange.

I owned D700 2 years ago. Recently I own all Canon gears and never looked back. I find Canon 5D2's IQ is far better than of D700.
