here's my problem:

Does anybody know what could be causing this?

The lens is not dirty, as it does it with all of my lenses.
The sensor is not dirty, as it was looked at under magnifcation.
And it's not a lens flare, as the same **** happens with a polarizer, and facing away from the sun.

It's really pissing me the hell off, since it's ruined about 30 good pictures.

If the arc is in the same place in all of your shots, then it's a shutter problem, and the camera needs repair.

Interesting...

You've ruled out cleanliness & lens issues, so that leaves some sort of problem with the body. I'm not buying that it's a shutter issue - it's hard for me to imagine how a malfunction of a (strictly rectangular) focal plane shutter could cause an artifact like this. Looks like some sort of internal reflection to me... mirror not fully retracting or something else out of place maybe?

Best get your camera checked out by a pro.

Ditto! It's come up a couple of times before - definately the shutter.

Can anyone explain how a malfunction in a vertically-traveling focal plane shutter could cause an arc like that? A sticky shutter would cause horizontal bands of over (or under) exposed image.

Not saying you're wrong... just trying to understand the physics.

Because of the way the shutter curtains are attached to the body, the path they make across the frame is actually an arc.

Just wild-a**ed thinking - if a shutter blade is cracked or has a hole in it and light gets through the crack (or hole), you would get an overexposure as that blade travels over the film/sensor space.

send it back to canon

email them first to see if it is still under warranty

if so, they should cover it with no questions asked

Ah, it's the Leprechaun in the camera pointing the way to the pot of gold it is.

If you've ruled that out then it's most likely the shutter.

I had a similar bright arc that was noticeable on less than 6 images, and the shutter ended up dying and needed to be replaced.

I don't understand something when I do a sensor clean and the mirror is locked up I don't see a shutter and assumed it was electronic. So where is the physical shutter ?
