EDIT: I just picked up a used Canon Compact Battery Pack E and tried it with my 580 EX II. It works very well.

The 580EX II has a very fast recycle time on it's own without an external pack. You will notice a slight improvement in recycle time with the Compact Battery Pack E, and the improved battery life would be a plus. Older flashes like the 430EZ, 540EZ, and 550EX have a slower recycles time and there is probably a more noticeable difference using an external battery pack.

The Compact Battery Pack E was replaced by the CP-E2, and then the CP-E3, and finally CP-E4. They all do basically the same thing, and from what I hear, they all improve the recycle times about the same because they all use the same high voltage output.

The CP-E2 is a modified version of the original Compact Battery Pack E. It improves flash recycle times significantly and increases the number of firings before batteries need to be replaced. This version accepts six "AA" size batteries; lithium, alkaline, as well as rechargeable NiCd's or NiMH.

CP-E3 is a new design with 8 AA batteries instead of 6 AA batteries.

Updated from the earlier version, the CP-E3, the CP-E4 has been improved with better dust and moisture sealing at the contact points, to get it to match the weather-resistance characteristics of the 580EX II Speedlite.
