Softbox questions

Hi guys, I'm totally new here and pretty much a neophyte about pro photography. However, being a graphic designer I need to be able to take photos, and not just amateur ones.

Lately I've been doing food photography or small to medium objects for sale on eBay etc.

I have the original Digital Rebel with no outboard flash. I bought a Lowelego (external link) a while back, and that's suited my needs -- a softbox for dummies, if you will -- but I find the light it produces is too weak and at the same time too soft. I need a softbox to go on the other side of the subjects I'm taking but I don't want a complicated tripod setup that I have to lug around -- just a nicely portable softbox that will complement the Lowelego.

I'm vaguely aware of the "strobe"-type softboxes that are controlled by the camera but really, that's way too technical for me -- all I need is a light that's on all the time, that I can move around in a relatively small space such as a table. I'd go for a tripod-based box if I had to, but could anyone recommend what they think I might be looking for? I was looking at a Flashpoint softbox (external link) but the description's pretty vague and I don't know whether it has to be triggered by my camera, whether it stays on when lit, or what.

The price is certainly right, but it's kind of suspiciously too cheap -- I don't want a rinky-dink easy-rip flimsy thing that I could possibly build myself, but I also don't want a $300 "lighting system" either.

For a peek at the kind of photos I'd want to be taking, please see these ones (external link) that I did for a restaurant recently.

As you see, I'm a complete newbie . . . any suggestions would be muchly appreciated!

Nick
