I’m sure this has been covered but I could not find it so here my question

Business owner wants Head shots for Advertising billboards that type of thing. Do I charge extra for the photo and give permission to use it for Advertising or do I sale the rights. My wife thinks I should charge 300 for the Rights I think it kind of high but I thought I would ask what you guys think.

That's quite low for selling the rights.

Usually, you bill for the shoot (and processing if it's excessive) and then you license the images for a specific use and a specific period of time. Generally speaking, the wider the distribution, the higher the invoice.

Get signed releases from every subject or the entire exercise could be rendered moot.

That's beyond low - the more rights you give up the higher the check as mentioned. Commercial usage (advertising) is usually a pretty hefty check, thousands.

the 300 is not part of the shoot just for the head shot. is 300 good if I keep the rights but let him use it for Advertising for his business or is it still low.

You should be charging much more than $300 for any image that will be used in Advertising. How much do you think the Client will be paying to have the ads placed on the billboards? Odds are it will cost thousands to place the ads and how much value a beautiful image add to the campaign? I'd suggest going to a bookstore and start reading books like "Pricing Photography" and other online resources. The most important part of this business is understanding the value of your work and then having your paperwork in order.

Mag cover shot cheap side $1,300°°

How much bigger is a billboard than a magazine.

Only sell limited use, and how long the use is good for.

If they can afford the several thousands for the billboard, they can afford the head shot, priced accordingly!

It's still low. Normally you would keep the copyright anyway (if that's what you mean by "rights"), and still charge them a goodly sum for the license to use the image on a billboard. Advertising draws the highest rates of any photography outside the rare high-end art auction--I charge that much in a small midwest town just for the license to use images for brochures and business cards...adding a license for billboards, television, or packaging would run $1000 in addition for each license even if the image was just a headshot (in this small town). However, that's for a "hardcopy" billboard...I have to consider whether I'll keep the same rate for one of the new LED billboards...there might be some more considerations to be made for them.
