That's, what's your Actuations Per Year? I've had my G11 for a year this month and I'm at 4477, or about 373 per month.

To find your APY...worked in my G11 not sure about others

You'll need a PC with a SD card reader.
Put the card in the reader, and create a new, empty file named VERS.REQ at the root level of the data card. (e.g. if the drive letter the reader uses for the card is "G:" then the file will be G:\VERS.REQ and not G:\DCIM\VERS.REQ or anything else.)
Put the card back in the G10, then start in Preview mode
Hold down the SET button and press DISPLAY
The Firmware Version and other info is shown.
Repeat the above step 2 more times.
The second screen displays some more internal version info.
The THIRD screen shows an item "Total Shoot:" followed by a number. The number is the total number of shots by the camera.

You can use notepad or other basic text editor to create the file VERS.txt
then exit out of notepad, right click on the file and choose rename, then change the extension to req, drag and drop into the SD card and your done

I found you have to hold the Set button, while you press the Display button three times in a row to get the total shot count.

G9 - 14,315 for three years, 397/month. However, it has not been used that much in the past year since I got the G11. So probably about 14,000 in two years = 583/month.

G11 - 5,210 for one year, 434/month.

There are a lot of shots that get tossed, since some are practice, and some do not turn out as I hoped. Both cameras work well and have not given me any problems. Glad I have them. I would like a larger image sensor, but not a larger camera, or a non-zoom lens. Too bad the laws of physics cannot be broken.

I do some time lapse photography, it's easy to shoot 400-700 frames per session

My low mileage, one careful owner since new, G11 is up to 12,032 frames in around 15 months – which means I am running at around 800 per month (but there is a real seasonality to my use, with far less use in the winter). I think my biggest G shoot was over 3,000 shots in a single week, but I am yet to get to the stage of using 3 x batteries in a single day!!!!

Gordon, can you guess-ti-mate over what period of time you have taken these photo's?

I've had my G12 since 2/14/2011. I'm at 10,008 after about 2 months.

Did some reading up on actuations...and I'm thinking maybe I'm going a tad crazy taking so many photos. Should I be concerned about my shutter giving up around any particular # of actuations?

Wow, an average of 166 per day.

I've never read anywhere that the shutter is good for X amount of actuations, or a *MTBF rating as used with a hard drive.

*Mean time between failures

I've had the G12 about 6 months so that would be about 660 shots a month. Now, many of those shots are "test" or "learning" shots for me.

I've had the G9 for about 3 years and 6 months but have primarily used the G12 the past 6 months. I'll guess 500 shots with the G9 in the past 6 months. That averages about 430 shots per month for the
G9.

My shooting rate with the G12 will probably taper off. My main cameras are the G12 and 7D. I probably shoot some 600 shots a month total.

Dennis,

Which button is the set button. I pressed the center button on the rotary and pressed the display button and all I got was the clock.

Thanks

The center button you refer to is called the Func./Set button. I called it the Set button, so that is the correct button to press. You MUST hold the Func./Set button down while you press the Display button three times before you will see information on Total Shoot.
