I may have the opportunity soon to secure a "in house" photo gig for a Venue in town shooting live bands. This obviously comes with getting myself some better gear including the 70-2002.8ISII. As for the body, Is the 7D capable or should i just get the 5D? Id prefer to keep cost down but if the 7D really isnt capable then i guess the 5D it is..

I'd guess (no personal experience with a 7D) that the 5D AF might be worse, specially on the outer AF points...

It's going to come down to the lighting. I've shot a couple of bands with a 5D and an 85mm f/1.8 under really good lighting conditions. The shots came out extremely well. Even the ones with red/magenta/deep blue lighting.

The 7D is going to give you a better oppty for focus if the players are moving around, i.e., better AI Servo tracking. If the bands are more or less stationary targets, then the 5DII would work great.

I was faced with the same choice when the 7D came out. Opted for the 7D for focus and speed with the intent on eventually upgrading to the 5d2 replacement. Both are great cameras and you cannot go wrong with either.

Agreed, you can't go wrong here! If you trying to save money, then go with the 7D. It is more than capable!
